Birthstone Jewelry

Hello 2017!!

As we embark on a new year and look forward to new beginnings, I thought it would be the perfect time to start a monthly blog post focused around birthstones.

The tradition of giving or wearing your birthstone dates back to antiquity, but the modern list of birthstones has only been around since 1912 when the Jewelers of America published what has become the Standard or Modern list. While that sounds to me like a marketing ploy, it certainly has impacted how we think about birthstones.

We all love our birthstones, but did you know that each gem has had special significance since ancient times. There are many interpretations spanning across different cultures, even different civilizations, but each month we will focus on the most popular interpretations from traditional and modern as well as non-traditional, including what stone corresponds to each months astrological signs.

Most people know what their birthstone is but I’m guessing they don’t know the other eleven and I’ll wager that they don’t know about the alternative birthstones.

So, when you are shopping for the perfect gift, and by perfect gift I talking about a beautiful birthstone necklace or ring, for yourself or your boho babe, you need to know what your options are!

Without further ado, let us start with January’s Birthstone, Garnet!

garnets

Garnet is actually the traditional, modern, and ancient birthstone for January. More specifically, the dark red variety.  Garnet actually comes in an array of colors from deep red to pale yellow as seen here.

The word garnet comes from the Latin “granatus” which means having many seeds.

One look  at a pomegranate and you will see how this gemstone got its name.

Take a look at these gorgeous red gems!

The ancients believed that Garnet was a stone of regeneration and energizing, that Garnet could boost the energy of an entire system and revitalize it.. More importantly, that it was a stone that could bring stability and order to chaos whether internal or external.

Now let’s take a look at an alternative birthstone derived from birth signs. January is the month of Capricorn and Aquarius.

The stone for Capricorns is Ruby, another beautiful red gemstone.

The stone for Aquarius is you guessed it, Garnet!

It seems that Garnet spans many interpretations of the birthstone for January.

So you can’t go wrong with garnet jewelry for all your Boho Babes with January birthdays!
