What is Beautiful?

What is beautiful?
For some, beauty lies within the esthetic, in the perfect shape, or the perfect color, or the perfect pitch.
For those inspired by nature, often times ‘beautiful’ comes from a little different perspective. When you experience the raw power of nature, you are using all of your senses, not just your eyes.

My favorite thing in life is to take a walk in the woods in early fall, right after the first rain. The smell is intoxicating, the colors are vivid, the mist settling on my skin and making the whole world around me glisten, the sounds of my steps crunching in the leaves, this invigorates me.

I find beauty in the very things that sing to my soul and make my soul sing back. And that my friends allows one to find great beauty and perfection in natures imperfections.

As a jewelry artist, I try to incorporate the beauty of nature in every piece I create. One of the reasons I started working in the medium of electroformed jewelry was the very earthy and organic feel of the metal formed to stone. But I also love the fact that you can create using found objects. That’s why you will see me incorporating seashells, leaves, feathers, beach glass and a myriad of other treasures into many of my creations.

Copper itself is such an earthy element. I mean, yes, of course it comes from the earth so by it’s very nature copper is earthy. But what makes it so unique is that it is the only metal strong enough in its natural state to be used in jewelry. No need to alloy it with another metal to make it strong. Did you know that sterling silver is alloyed with copper for strength? That’s right, copper is a powerhouse metal! I think that is another great attribute of electroformed jewelry!!

I created this fluorite crystal pendant quite awhile back. To me, the very earthiness of the raw amethyst crystal cluster and copper mixed with the smooth lines of the fluorite crystal created harmony between the pairing. When she was all done, I noticed that the fluorite was not perfectly polished and smooth. There were some imperfections in her.

While that very much appealed to my sense of beauty, I was worried my tribe would judge her little imperfections and find her unworthy. So, I put her in a box and hid her away where it was safe.
Well, her little siren’s song has been floating out to me lately, pleading to me to let her perfectly imperfect beauty shine. How could I deny nature herself?

So, I will be listing her in the shop this weekend, hoping that you too will find perfection in the imperfection.
Love and Light tribe 💗

I am really enjoying this wonderful blog…give her a whirl ❤

I had to walk away oh not to make others realize how worthy I was

But for me to understand and acknowledge my own self worth

I had to learn that one keeps going long after you think you cannotIf I could not walk far and fast I think I should just explode and perish

~ CHARLES DICKINS ~So I walked to a place that gave me a reason to smile

It made me feel rich counting all the gifts I have that money just can’t buy

I thought that my life didn’t seem to be the way I wanted it to be

I was living in it the best way I knew how

There is no perfect life they keep telling me and suggested that I fill it with some perfect memories and keep smiling along my wayToday is your day your…

April’s Birthstone

The April Birthstone is…

Not a big surprise here…I’m sure most of you already know the modern birthstone for all you April Babes…you guessed it, DIAMOND! Hmm…did I just miss a April Fools Day prank?  Oh well!!

But did you know the beautiful stone we know today as the ‘engagement’ stone did not become so until about 1930 when the DeBeers diamond mining company started a advertising campaign that is still used today?  How about that little nugget of marketing genius?

I’m not going to get into a whole article about diamonds, you can poke around the internet and learn everything you need to know about the colorless sparkly thing we have come to know as diamond – but, since we are talking birthstones here, I need to tell you there many many more shades of diamond that you may not know about. The most well know of these colorful

varieties is the Hope Diamond, also known as Le Bijou du Roi (“the King’s Jewel”).

Hope Diamond

The variety of shades available has allowed jewelers to match color names with what’s in vogue, much like the fashion industry does when introducing “new” colors: champagne (brown), pumpkin (orange), canary (yellow), etc.  Yet again a marketing ploy to encourage us to buy these beautiful gems!! LOL

But who could resist these beauties…

In keeping with our monthly theme…here are the alternative birthstones for April

The traditional birthstone for April is Sapphire ~ remember all the different colors that sapphire comes in?sapphire-colors

The birthstone associated with the zodiac signs for you April babes are

Aries which we learned last month has a birthstone of Bloodstone

and Taurus whose birthstone is Emerald.

Emerald in the rough

More on this beautiful birthstone next month!!

Happy April !!  Remember to check back each month to explore all the different varieties of birthstones.

What kind of hat do you wear?

Read This!!! Love Love Love this post by Being Margaret, if your not following her you should! Happy Monday!

Being Margaret

Recently, I came to the realization that I think with the right side of my brain. OK, well, that’s not entirely true. I always knew I had an artsy side and was more emotional and compulsive than the average, female, hot mess. But, it was not until my early 50’s that I admitted to myself and acknowledged that yes, I am a right sided thinker.

It’s not that there is anything odd or unusual about a person who ignores the left side of their brain. It’s just that by acknowledging that you are indeed a creative person, you subconsciously end up putting pressure on yourself.

What am I, an artist? A Writer? An actress or filmmaker? A musician?

Let’s go back a bit….. By the time I hit my early 50’s, my boys were (for the most part) grown and on their own. I found myself with lots of time…

And The March Birthstone Is….

And the March Birthstone Is…

Hold on, this is going to be a wild ride!  I think you will be surprised to find out what the alternative birthstones are, but let’s start with the modern stone which is Aquamarine.

Aquamarine comes from the Latin aqua marinus, which translates to “water of the sea,” and refers to its sparkling ocean-like color. We can thank the iron oxides within the chemical makeup of this stone for its beautiful bluish green color.

In ancient lore, Aquamarine was believed to be the treasure of mermaids, and was used by sailors as a talisman of good luck, fearlessness and protection. Oooh, mermaid jewelry alert!!  rough-aquamarine

Look at this gorgeous rings!!  Of course, these were made with an aqua aura crystal, but it is for sure, mermaid jewelry!!!

Moving on from modern to traditional let me introduce you to Bloodstone. I know, the name sounds odd, but this is a gorgeous stone!

bloodstone-tumbled-stonesIn the ancient world, Bloodstone (Heliotrope)

was considered to be the most beautiful

of the Jaspers, a deep, earthy green gem

emboldened with spots of bright red.bloodstone-arrowhead-pendant-3

Now let’s take a look at an alternative birthstone derived from your birth sign.

March is the month of Pisces and Aries.

We learned last month the stone for Pisces is Amethyst and the stone for Aries is….wait for it…Diamond AND Sapphire!!

did you know that Sapphire comes in a variety of colors? Just look at these beautiful gems, all Sapphire!!!

I know, you’re probably thinking I have lost my mind, but I kid you not…that makes a total of four choices for March…To recap…Aquamarine, Bloodstone, Diamond, and, Sapphire, but I say why choose just one?

Hmmmm…..I think its time to hit the bench to create with these gorgeous stones!!!
